Kentucky and Indiana Accutane Lawyers

Accutane is a drug that was developed by Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. for treating severe Cystic (Nodular) Acne. Accutane is the brand name for the drug Isotretinoin, which is also marketed under the names Roaccutane, Amnesteem, Claravis and Sotret. Thanks to an aggressive marketing campaign by the manufacturer, Roche Pharmaceuticals, Accutane has been frequently prescribed for common Acne over the past two decades.

Accutane Used for Treating Acne

Initially, Accutane was hailed as a "miracle drug" for treating severely disfiguring Acne that would not respond to other treatments. Recently however, it is believed that Accutane may cause a number of serious side effects. As a result, several lawsuits have been filed against Accutane and Roche. There have been nearly 1,000 reported birth defects, and more than 10,000 miscarriages that may be linked to the use of Accutane.

Roche Discontinued Accutane in 2009

Roche discontinued production of Accutane in 2009, citing heavy competition, but there are still several alternative products on the market that contain Isotretinoin. Some say that these drugs should be prescribed for only the most severe cases of Acne and even then only as a last resort. However, there is some question as to whether Isotretinoin should be on the market at all.

Roche Pharmaceuticals warned about serious side effects in Accutane's Medication Guide, product labeling, and other Accutane information. However, that does not mean that Roche has insulated itself from all liability involving Accutane lawsuits. In fact, there have been hundreds of lawsuits filed against Accutane and Roche has lost every lawsuit (excluding one reversal in appeals court). They have been ordered to pay a total of $54 million.
