ACTOS AND BLADDER CANCER

The defective drug attorneys at Dyer, Garofalo, Mann & Schultz are now reviewing cases involving the Diabetes drug Actos. Type II Diabetes is a medical condition wherein the pancreas does not produce a sufficient amount of insulin, the hormone necessary for the metabolism of carbohydrates (long sugar chains) and fat in the human body. Treatment for Type II diabetes almost always includes oral antidiabetic medication along with a specified diet and exercise program. If such a program is prescribed and adhered to, a patient is often able to avoid the need for daily injectable insulin medication.

Actos is prescribed for the treatment of Type II Diabetes

Actos, the brand name for pioglitazone, is an oral antidiabetic medication manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc. It is prescribed for the treatment of Type II Diabetes and may be linked to several potentially dangerous side effects which have launched safety reviews and studies world-wide. Most notably, data from an ongoing 10-year study which shows that patients who have taken Actos for at least 12 months may have a 40% increased risk of getting bladder cancer. Furthermore, it is believed that the longer a patient remains on Actos and the larger the dose, the higher the increased risk for bladder cancer. Some of the signs and symptoms for bladder cancer that patients taking Actos may experience are:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Pain during urination
  • Frequent urination
  • Feeling the need to urinate without results
