Zocor Side Effects Attorney

Zocor is a brand name for Simvastatin and is manufactured, marketed, and distributed by Merck Pharmaceuticals. It is a commonly prescribed "Statin" drug, which is a classification of medication that is used in the treatment of patients who suffer from high cholesterol.

Zocor is Contraindicated for Pregnant Women

While Zocor can be effective in treating high cholesterol it has been contraindicated for pregnant patients, and thus has now been recognized as unsafe for women who are in any part of their pregnancy or breast feeding. Since 2010, the FDA has been monitoring Zocor due to serious side effects that include, but are not limited to: myopthay (weakened muscles) and Rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition that develops in muscles. It usually begins with muscle pain, but if not treated, may advance to disturbing stages of muscle disease, muscle loss, and even death due to kidney failure in some cases.

Zocor can also be detrimental to anyone who is allergic to cellulose, lactose, magnesium stearate, iron oxides, talc, titanium dioxide, and starch. It is also not supposed to be prescribed if the patient suffers from liver disease or is at risk for liver disease. In many cases, patients are not told about Zocor affecting these pre-existing conditions and are thus placed in harm's way due to negligence.

Patients who were prescribed over 80mg in their first year of regularly ingesting the drug are most at risk.
