Chantix is a smoking cessation medication, generically known as varenicline. Manufactured and marketed by
Pfizer, it works by blocking nicotine receptors, thereby reducing cravings and decreasing the pleasurable side effects of cigarettes and other tobacco products. It is an alternative to other smoking cessation drugs and nicotine replacement therapy.
In May of 2008, the FDA issued a strong warning regarding side effects of Chantix, formally announcing that it was investigating links to certain complications in some users, including changes in behavior, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal ideation, and suicidal behavior.
Before the FDA acknowledged potential hazards of Chantix, stories on its dangers were surfacing, as an increasing number of users reported experiencing vivid hallucinogenic dreams and suicidal thoughts while taking the medication. In severe cases, side effects have been implicated in the bizarre deaths, injuries and suicides of individuals across the globe.
Since it was first approved through an expedited priority review, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has required Pfizer to add information to the Chantix warning label about a possible increased risk of suicide, suicidal thoughts and abnormal behavior, which has been seen among users of the drug.
Chantix has also been linked to liver failure, hepatitis, and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), which is a severe skin reaction that causes intense rashes and blistering of the skin and mouth. At its worst, SJS victim's skin will burn from the inside out. SJS often requires treatment in an intensive care unit (ICU) or the burn unit of a hospital. In approximately 5–15% of the severe occurrences of SJS, the patient may die.
