Hydroxycut is the brand name of one of America's top-selling weight loss products, taken by millions of consumers each year. Hydroxycut was marketed as a safe dietary supplement that contains only "natural" ingredients, but in May 2009 the
Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned users to stop taking the weight-loss supplement due to a link to liver damage, kidney failure, cardiovascular disorders, and even death,
recalling 14 Hydroxycut products. The following products have been recalled:

- Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets
- Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Caplets
- Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
- Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
- Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
- Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
- Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
- Hydroxycut Natural
- Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
- Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
Despite the fact that Hydroxycut was marketed as a safe natural product, the manufacturers failed to sufficiently study and test the effects of the various herbal extracts, chemicals and metals contained in the supplement. In addition, users were not provided with warnings about the potential Hydroxycut liver side effects, which could leave them with disabling or fatal injuries.
In its Hydroxycut health alert, the FDA said anyone, even people who had no pre-existing medical conditions, have needed liver transplants after taking the weight-loss supplement.
In January 2010, the American Journal of Gastroenterology released a report on a study that strengthed the FDA's findings that Hydroxycut caused serious liver damage. In fact, 17 new cases of liver damage attributed to the use of Hydroxycut were announced.
